When our students ask why they have to complete a particular assignment for our class, do we have a good answer? Are we sometimes frustrated by students not seeming to understand how to accomplish a task or what steps they need to take on a project? Sometimes the answers to these problems are within the assignment design itself. This interactive workshop will examine the idea of transparency in learning, and present some of the research supporting its efficacy for student learning. We’ll examine the TILT (Transparency in Learning and Teaching) framework for assignment design and other protocols that help with clarity and transparency. You’ll come out of this session with the resources to effectively design assignments that engage students’ understanding to promote deeper learning.
